WHAT IS BASK?

BASK was created as a platform for dialogue between Wrocław and San Sebastian, the Wrocław's twin European Capital of Culture 2016. Its aim is to look for common points between Polish and Basque cultures and to prepare space for undertaking creative activity and gaining practical artistic skills during workshops and cultural events. Each summer, during a 3-day long event, one forgotten localization in the city of Wrocław turns into the centre of dialogue and exploration of the Basque culture. This year's edition of the event will take place on July 1-3, in the villa formerly owned by Oswald Püschel at Parkowa 1-3 in Wrocław.

PLAY THE BASQUE WAY

This time we will have a closer look at the ways the Basques understand the entertainment (looking for similarities and differences between the Polish and Basque leisure activities). The theme of this year's edition is GAME || JOKOA, understood in the context of artistic activities as such and in the context of documenting entertainment. Why? The entertainment is a key to determine both the identity of a given generation and any forms of social life. It is also an essential element of culture which is established and constantly developing outside the offices, away from professional duties.

PLACE FOR CULTURE

BASK helps recover space for culture: both through free cultural education (aimed at gaining practical artistic skills, improving cultural competence and introducing intercultural dialogue) and through the use of new localizations for cultural events in Wrocław. This year we will meet in the former villa of Oswald Püschel, the pearl of the nineteenth-century architecture (Parkowa 1 – 3 in Szczytniki district).

WORKSHOPS

The heart of the project is a series of workshops and urban activities carried out by the Polish and Basque artists, cultural managers and experts in the field of Basque culture. Together with the participants, they will attempt to interpret Basque culture, its contradictions and mysteries, using various educational and artistic tools.

As urban activities we understand any activity in public spaces in Wroclaw, having a form of the game and presenting the important phenomena of contemporary culture and social problems for the whole of Europe. Participants of the city actions will discuss the problems of nationality, cultural identity, stereotypes, and compare the situation of urban space in Wroclaw and San Sebastian. There also will be organized a series of meetings with artists during the creation process, which will result in a common site-specific work, development of good practices, historical confrontations or performative actions in the urban tissue.

During the workshops, each participant will have the opportunity to gain practical skills in the field of fashion, design, food design and crafts while learning about the history, traditions and culture of other nations. Works created during the workshops will be a fusion of Polish and Basque traditions and contemporary cultural reality.

BASQUE ARTISTS

During the event there will be a chance to meet artists from the Basque Country, as well as see the effects of residence of Polish artists who had the opportunity to work in San Sebastian. All of this thanks to the Artist-in-Residence Programme A-i-R Wro, part of the European Capital of Culture Wroclaw 2016. This year, we will summarize the three years of residential exchange between the capital of Lower Silesia and San Sebastian. There will be also an opportunity to see the results of the work of this year's residents – Diego Vivanco, who is preparing "And Tomorrow What?" project, analyzing the income situation of contemporary artists (which non-artistic works do they need to take to be able to take care of the art?) and Aitor Gametxo, realizing a documentary essay "City of Sounds and Silence" - observation Wroclaw through the prism of its deaf population.

BASK 2016 and A-i-R Wro are implemented within the framework of the European Capital of Culture Wroclaw 2016 and are financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of Poland.

OPENING OF THE VILLA:

EXHIBITION:

BudCud on vacation - Do It (All) Yourself
01.07.2016, 17.00-23.00
02-03.07.2016, 12.00-23.00

Someone has to restrain from playing, so that others could play. Agata and Mateusz from the BudCud studio are going on vacation, but the Open Laboratory of Basque Culture BASK at Parkowa offers a lot of work to be done by the visitors. The designers turned the old reading room formerly owned by the Medical University into their studio. It is where some tasks will be waiting for those who are willing to undertake them. Design challenges, interlaced with video tutorials on architectural drawing and designing, will not only help professionals improve their skills but will also enable them to act like real constructors. The tutorials constitute ready-made instructions and are complemented with mood boards, that is collections of inspirations prepared by the architects to prevent the participants from getting stuck with the most obvious solution.

All the works may be taken home. A better idea is, however, to leave them in order to create a common installation at BudCud studio which will prove you were not wasting time.

Start with the workshop, then create!

The studio may be visited from Friday to Sunday in the opening hours of BASK (no previous registration is required). The supervisor: Aleksandra Zielonka from BudCud.

Especially for BASK a duet of architects from BudCud prepared a live exhibition being created instantly on the spot by the visitors. Consequently, the creators are playing with two main concepts around which human life is organised - work and leisure. With the help of video tutorials, tasks and instructions, the architects prove that what is usually considered a tedious chore, can also be fun.

BIO:
BudCud is a contemporary practice operating within the fields of architecture and urbanism run by Agata Woźniczka and Mateusz Adamczyk. They work in Poland and abroad, proving that architecture can be the result of the context and dreams; the substantial and the ephemeral. They create taking into account the needs of humans, animals and plants because – as they put it - architecture is part of the great organism. They have collaborated with many institutions, prepared a countless amount of exhibitions, projects and workshops and won a large number of Polish and international awards.

WORKSHOPS:

MASSMIX presents: TRYBITRON
02.07.2016, 12.00-17.00 + surprise trip
03.07.2016, 12.00-17.00 + surprise trip

The idea of sticker art - multiplied, light, ubiquitous and shapeless - as Massimix artists describe it, may be compared to graffiti with which the workshop organisers are well acquainted.

This time, however, the focus is put on sticker art, to the production of which the audience will be encouraged.
The garden surrounding the villa at Parkowa will turn into a workshop. Here the participants wearing special uniforms will work on a "production line" under the guidance of the Massmix team. As a result, unique sticker will be created.

May a mass production be fun? The answer is yes, as long as the resulting work is the effect of a collective act of improvisation. You are thus kindly invited to participate in a special workshop for designers, graphic designers, street artists and art enthusiasts.

BIO:
Massmix constitutes an artistic collective. Since 2006 they have been carrying out projects which may be located on the borderline of painting and street art. They are also engaged in preparing exhibitions and workshops aimed at creating collective pieces of work. Their model of work resembles a process of doing a jigsaw puzzle, except that it resigns from any imposed pattern or template.
The collective organised 118 actions, documented on www.massmix.bzzz.net. On a daily basis they run V9 gallery in Warsaw.

berETA by Goes to M
01.07.2016, 17.00-21.00
02.07.2016, 12.00-16.00

If you looked for a region in Poland bearing any similarity to the Basque Country, it would undoubtedly be Silesia. The similarity lies not in the architecture or landscape, but in a sense of independence and the inhabitants' cultural identity so distinctive from the rest of the country.

Goes to M, the creators of unique artistic textiles, will teach the participants modern methods of creating appliqués based on traditional Basque berets but inspired by the region of Silesia. Together with the artists, a mood board will be created which will serve as the starting point for individual projects. Appliqué technique constitutes a beautiful alternative to printing. It makes use of decorative elements made of different materials which are applied to the fabric. Anyone can prepare his traditional Basque beret in a new way.

BIO:
The studio was founded in 2012 in Katowice at the initiative of Magda Pogorzelska, its main author and designer. GOES TO M is a fusion of a comfortable cut with rich ornamentation. All products are created using appliqué technique which is an alternative to printing. The technique involves decorative elements of different fabrics being applied to another surface. As a result, totally unique, artistic textile is created.

Because fabrics and sartorial accessories from around the world are used in the production process, each product is unique. The combination of luxurious woven and knitted fabrics with recycled materials adheres to the idea of slow fashion and conscious consumption. Short collections occurr twice a year and are light and humorous, so distinctive from the mainstream canons.

Ainara LeGardon – an artist from Bilbao where she has been recognised as one of the most important representants of alternative music scene. She is known for her improvised performances during which her voice, body and carefully selected objects become her instruments. LeGardon is also a member of one of the oldest European improvising orchestras – Orquestra FOCO. Moreover, at the turn of June and July 2015 she stayed in Wrocław as a participant of the Artist-in-Residency Programme A-i-R Wro during which she was studying the city's auditor-sphere. This year at the Open Lab of Basque Culture BASK, she will play a solo concert, during which she will demonstrate raw aesthetics, deep emotionality and sincerity – the features inevitably associated with her artistic attainment.

EXHIBITION OF BASQUE AND POLISH ARTISTS, CELEBRATING THE THIRD ANNIVERSARY OF THE RESIDENCY EXCHANGE BETWEEN ECOC WROCŁAW 2016 AND ECOC DONOSTIA / SAN SEBASTIAN 2016
Openning: 01.07.2016, 17:00
01-03.07.2016

Goiatz Labandibar – a writer and journalist. In 2014, during her residency in Wroclaw, she wrote a series of twelve short-stores based on twelve photographs "I ja tam byłam... pstryk!" [ "And I was there too... click!"]. Women captured on photographs by six female photographers became a pretext to combine the themes of gender and imagination. During the BASK 2016, Wrocław residents will have a unique opportunity to read Goiatz's texts. Among the stories collected, there is one about the girl whose boyfriend sings at the concert at Słodowa Island or a very interesting text in which the author refers to the Polish grammatical gender.

"Radiography of a Face"

Lips. A noun. Fleshy edges around the mouthpart, occurring in humans and other vertebrates.

A woman who started the lineage of women with such lips had no opportunity to meet the third generation. Yet, if she had had such an opportunity and someone had asked her: "Why does this child put lipstick on?", she would have answered: "Because nowadays we have color photography."
Translation: Aleksandra Solińska

Aleksandra Wałaszek – a graduate  from the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design in Wrocław. She is the author of variety of objects, installations, photographs and happenings. She is primarily interested in identity, language and memory issues. Her works and actions are focused around the communication between people -  the space where the familiar meets the foreign. Consequently, the artists refers to her works as "geo-biographical" phenomena. In 2015, during her residency in the Basque Country, she decided to realise the project "Panorama" - an audio guide around San Sebastian. The "geo-biographical" sound map by Wałaszek consists of memories, photos and reflections of her interlocutors. Some of them will be presented at BASK 2016.

Anna Nosowicz – a graduate from the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design in Wrocław (specialization: painting), she also studied at the Academy of Arts and Design in Bratislava. In her artistic activity, she applies a variety of techniques - combining traditional painting with reusable materials; she also runs educational projects. During her two residencies in the Basque Country, she was conducting workshops for children and teenagers which resulted in creation of lanterns - light installations made up of descriptions, notes, photographs and recycled colourful foil. They have been displayed twice already - in 2015 in San Sebastian, and at the beginning of 2016 in Elgoibar. During BASK 2016, the visitors will have an opportunity to see Nosowicz's photos documenting the process of lanterns creation, workshops and both exhibitions.

Gerard Lebik – an experimental musician, composer and an author of sound installations and interventions in public space. His music is based on musical notation or improvisation with the use of electro and acoustic instruments. He explores the sound phenomenon through various tools and techniques: saxophones, air compressors, VHS recorders, electronics, software. The audio-video works presented at BASK resulted from his residency in San Sebastian in 2015. During his stay, the artist explored the marks the Cantabrian Sea left on the audio-sphere around the sculptures by Eduardo Chillida, trying to record "a sound frozen in time". This unusually challenging experiment, although unsuccessful, was turned into another artistic action whose aim is to bring the audience closer to the essence of releasing sound from metal while it is being deformed and deconstructed.

Diego Vivanco – a visual and conceptual artist from Bilbao, currently staying in Wrocław as a guest of an art residency. He has been awarded numerous prizes and scholarships for his photographic and video works. Some of them were also exhibited, i.e. at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao or at the Art Gallery Eigen in Leipzig. In 2013, he founded an art collective "Situation Room". Vivanco's project is an analysis of the situation of young artists who need to undertake non-artistic jobs in order to realise their own artistic visions. Residency programme is an answer to such problems, since its aim is to offer artists the opportunity to focus exclusively on their creative work without thinking about money. Vivanco. however, decided to reverse this situation. He applied for a job in places which have nothing in common with art. Moreover, he did not claim any money in return, questioning thus the division between artistic activity and "regular" work. The artist has been employed, among others, at the upholsterer's and at the baker's in Wrocław Nadodrze. During BASK 2016, the audience will have an opportunity to see the effects of his work - both creative and not.

www.diegovivanco.net

Aitor Gametxo – an audio-visual artist, director and author of numerous short films. He studied audiovisual communication in Bilbao and Barcelona. In 2014, he won the X Films Project award at the International Documentary Film Festival Punto de Vista and was thus able to make a full-length documentary film "Inna mapa Abauntz" ["El otro mapa de Abauntz"].During this year's residency, Gametxo worked on an essay film "Cicha Symfonia" ["Silent Symphony"], dedicated to the people with hearing impairment living in Wroclaw. Those 20 minutes of silence help us understand the reality in which the deaf live; the city and the way they deal with everyday challenges. The work may be treated as a homage to the urban symphony of the 20s, where the frenetic rhythms of the city was illustrated by machines and trains. The lack of sound in the film enables the spectators not only to focus on motion which constitutes the essence of cinema, but also helps them return to the era of silent films. Being deaf may in a way unite people. In this process of acquiring a collective identity, language plays a special role. Polish sign language, like its equivalents worldwide, makes use not only of signs but also, of space, facial expressions and gestures to transmit the message. And the visual aspect of the sign language was an additional inspiration for Gametxo. His "Silent Symphony" will be presented at BASK 2016.

MEETING AND WORKSHOP SUMMARISING THREE YEARS OF RESIDENCY EXCHANGE BETWEEN ECOC WROCŁAW 2016 AND ECOC DONOSTIA / SAN SEBASTIAN 2016
01-03.07.2016

Within the framework of Artist-in-Residency Programme A-i-R Wro, not only exhibitions but also meetings will be held at BASK 2016. Their aim is to summarise three years of residency exchange between the two European Capitals of Culture 2016 – San Sebastian and Wroclaw. The meetings will be attended by artists and representatives of institutions and organizations participating in the exchange. Their purpose is to gather experiences, summarise them and examine the impact the residences had on individual artists. Did the established friendships and professional relationships have become a pretext for further joint creative actions? What does a network connecting such different artists and cultures look like? Is it still inspiring? These questions and issues will be discussed during workshops and presented in the form of a zin - the publication whose content and visual side will be created by the participants.

The workshop will be conducted by Ewa Głowacka - a graduate from the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design in Wrocław, the University of Wrocław and the Universidad del Pais Vasco in Bilbao. Głowacka deals with screen printing and graphic design. On a daily basis she is associated with the printing collective SITWA (former SITO CRK) and collective MODUŁ.

More details about the A-i-R Wro can be found here.
