BlindWiki - discover the invisible

After joint activities with communities in Australia, Italy and Germany, Antoni Abad, a Catalan artist, is going to carry out another instalment of the famous BlindWiki project, which will take place in Wrocław, as part of the European Capital of Culture Wrocław 2016 celebrations. BlindWiki is an interactive, international civic network, in which blind or visually impaired users share information about architectonic obstacles they meet on their way using their mobile phones. Based on their reports, a constantly updated on-line accessibility map of the cities is created.

BlindWiki is not only an on-line platform with information on obstacles and difficulties seen every day by the participants of the project, but also a trove of experiences, opinions and stories, combined into a creative cartography of the invisible. But BlindWiki is more than that, as the project also includes a two-week workshop with Antoni Abad, which aims at exchange of experiences between the blind and visually impaired and the residents of Wrocław thanks to active participation of the users. The project is also an initiative which provides both orientation and entertainment to its members. It may not replace a white cane or a guide dog, but it has a potential to supplement them. The goal of the project is to create a non-obvious map of the city and to inspire a debate on the presence of the blind and visually impaired people in public space. As a result, a global exchange network is built among users, who now have an opportunity to talk about their experiences and express their opinions, but most importantly, also a way to compare conditions in their home cities and lobby for the better and more advanced facilities in the urban landscape.

Thanks to the project, created by Antoni Abad, who explores our social space using artistic tools, the residents of Wrocław will have a chance to see more...

The project is open to everyone - the blind and visually impaired, as well as people with normal eyesight. Everyone can participate in the creation of the BlindWiki sensory map by downloading a mobile application. Visually impaired people and the allies are always welcome!
