Children’s Literature Festival in Wrocław

From 31 May to 5 June Wrocław will turn into the capital of children’s books, all because of the Children’s Literature Festival, coming to the city for the third time. The programme will offer over 30 events, including meetings with uncontested stars of literature for the youngest readers: Brandon Mull and Martin Widmark, as well as exhibitions, workshops, plays, a concert and an urban game for families. The winner of the Best Polish Children’s Book of 2015 will also be revealed during the Festival.

Travel is the main theme of this year’s 3rd Edition of the Children’s Literature Festival, but not only travel through space. The children who will participate in the evening Readings Before Sunset will also go back in time. In the Ethnographic Museum they will learn the old secrets of beekeeping, the Post and Telecommunications Museum will let them design their own postage stamps, and the Museum of Archaeology will make them feel like Indiana Jones. All of this with the best literature read by famous figures, including Mayor Rafał Dutkiewicz, who will open the evening series.

Brandon Mull, the author of the Fablehaven series, and Martin Widmark, creator of The Whodunit Detective Agency are two international stars of the Children’s Literature Festival in Wrocław, but of course the festival would not be complete without the best Polish authors, including Ewa Chotomska, Barbara Gawryluk and Grzegorz Kasdepke. The festival art workshops will be conducted by Julia Friese, Grażka Lange, Marianna Oklejak and Piotr Socha. There also will be something to watch, as two exhibitions are planned: the open-air Butenko PINXIT! featuring its star, Gapiszon, and the "Artist and Masterpieces of Illustration", curated by the Bologna Children’s Book Fair/Bologna Fiere – 50 years of the most beautiful illustrations.

The programme also comprises two theatrical plays. It is worth paying attention to the world premiere of the play based on themes from Agnieszka Taborska’s Licho nie śpi – winner of the Best Children’s Book Competition last year. On the subject of the competition... This year’s winner of the Award will be revealed during the official Gala (with Oscar-like atmosphere) in the New Horizons Art House Cinema on 5 June. You can vote for the best book at http://fldd.pl/2016/glosowanie/ until 23 May. The Gala – apart from revealing the winner of the plebiscite and numerous surprises – will feature a concert by Jerz Igor.

That is still not all! A thrilling journey to the Kingdom of Stories awaits the bold adventurers who will take part in the Secret Hunters family urban game, and those who are in a dire need of literary prescription should visit the Literary Emergency Room, which will operate on 3 and 4 June in the Pan Tadeusz Museum.
