CROSS: Exhibition of works by Svea Duwe and Fabien Zocco

Svea Duwe from Dresden and Fabien Zocco from Lille are artists, whose paths crossed in Wrocław in 2015, as part of the A-i-R Wro Artistic Residence Programme, a part of the European Capital of Culture Wrocław 2016 celebrations. As a result of their meeting, a beautiful friendship was born, with exploration of Wrocław resulting in this exhibition, the title of which recalls an intersection and life crossing their paths. Come and join us on 27 May at 8:00 p.m. for the opening of the exhibition in Kolektyf Art Gallery at Rydygiera 23 in Wrocław.

What is CROSS?
CROSS is a word denoting a wide spectrum of phenomena, from meeting, to crossing, overcoming obstacles and an obvious religious symbol. This exhibition, however, will be focused on that single point of contact between two lines, where some truth can be found, serving here as a starting point for the deliberations about the condition of contemporary society, full of contradictions and mutually exclusive ideologies.

Fear, openness, exclusion
Fabien Zocco
, who focuses on new media art, will show us what happens when we juxtapose our feeling of safety, developed over the years with the escalation of fear culture in the media. The constant state of fear and danger, induced by the news programmes in the name of the golden rule - “if it bleeds, it leads”, weakens our interpersonal ties and feeling of community, making us distrustful of the world, altering the images of ourselves and our surroundings.

Svea Duwe, an artist who uses photography and video in her works, a sculptor and a performer will present the world of contradictions based on Wrocław: an open city full of culture, sounding with a hundred languages, with horizons beyond borders, while at the same time pondering about the refugee crisis and attitudes towards the problem around the world. This reveals the paradox: on the one hand we invite people from around the world, wanting them to feel at home, and on the other we are lost in a labyrinth of fear when it comes to refugees.
