ECoC 2016 Closing Weekend: take part in free events!

The Sky Web performance is not the only event taking place as part of the ECoC 2016 Closing Weekend available to the audience completely free of charge. The “Sound Play” featuring Małgorzata Foremniak, Arkadiusz Jakubik and Robert Więckiewicz reading fragments of works by Sławomir Mrożek, the largest silent disco in Europe at the Centennial Hall for thousands of party-goers, dozens of exhibitions, plays and street performances – these are just some of almost a hundred free cultural events, offered to the residents and guests on the Closing Weekend.

The Largest Silent Disco in Europe
N.O.S. Collective [Nogaś. Obszańska. Szydłowska] returns to Wrocław! The European Capital of Culture Wrocław 2016 would like to invite everyone for the largest SILENT DISCO in Europe! We are going to prepare 2300 headphones at the Centennial Hall – all as a part of the ECoC 2016 Closing Weekend! The party will start at 10:30 p.m. and run until 5:00 a.m.

Open Art Days!
The Open Art Days will be a treat not only for the lovers of visual arts. On December 16-18, the exhibitions such as Photography Never Dies at the Main Railway Station, Wrocław 1945-2016 – a permanent exhibition at the Zajezdnia History Centre, as well as Lviv. 24 June 1937. City, Architecture, Modernism at the Museum of Architecture will be available free of charge. Additionally, the admission fees for the famous Summer Rental exhibition at the Four Domes Pavilion and The Wrocław Europe at the National Museum will be entirely symbolic (1-3 PLN). What is more, on December 17 those interested will be able to take a sneak peek behind the scenes of the Wrocław Opera, see the Shadows exhibition presenting works by Mathilde Lavenne, created as part of the A-i-R Wro Artistic Residence programme and the unique “Bubble, bubble” performance inspired by the language of dolphins.

The Sound Play at the Centennial Hall
Loud reading of outstanding literary works by exceptional actors became a tradition in Wrocław, and the events were appreciated by thousands of listeners and readers taking part in the previous events, such as the European Literature Nights. This time join us to read together with actors. The works by Sławomir Mrożek will be read by Małgorzata Foremniak, Arkadiusz Jakubik and Robert Więckiewicz.

A tour of the Opera

On December 16, 17 and 18 you will be able to take a sneak peek behind the scenes of the Wrocław Opera and visit places which are normally inaccessible for the audience. You can sign up for this unique tour at the ECoC Infopoint (Świdnicka 8c). The groups, numbering max. 50 people will be guided by Adam Fratczak. Until the end of January the Opera foyer will hold an exhibition devoted to various opera performances created by Ewa Michnik, former director of the Wrocław Opera.

Starting on December 15, tickets for all three tours will be made available at the ECoC Infopoint (Świdnicka 8c).

Culinary treats of the ECoC 2016
It is also worth paying a visit to the various cafés and restaurants in Wrocław. On December 15-18, selected establishments will serve some of the special dishes straight from the Wrocław Cookbook published this year, as a culinary insight into the European Capital of Culture. Among the featured dishes is Grandpa Karol’s egg paste, Emperor’s Treat – a yeast cake with cinnamon streusel, keselica with potatoes – a Lemko sour oat soup, tomato soup from Oporów, Silesian Heaven – pork loin with smoked plums and buckwheat blintz with cream fraiche. Bon appétit. You can find the cultural dishes at various cafés and restaurants presented below.

Artistic illumination at Dunikowski Boulevard
Going on an evening walk along the Dunikowski Boulevard, decorated for the Closing Weekend with picturesque lighting will be a truly unique experience. Visit this beautiful meeting place and enjoy the postcard view of the city – the Cathedral Island. 

“Journeys with a flag” – open air exhibition
ECoC en route. The exhibition presents photographs from many corners of the world, taken by the students of the XVII LO representing the ECoC Wrocław 2016.

Parade: Puppet Clinic Theatre’s Flying Circus
A colourful parade, created by the Puppet Clinic Theatre, featuring puppets and actresses will start at Barbara Bar. At various spots in the city, the parade will be joined by numerous groups of actors with characteristic attributes and even an... elephant, giraffe and a lion! The final show will take place near the Fencer’s monument on the University Square.

Parade of Lviv Carollers
A mobile show featuring actors and musicians playing in a march and large, spinning Christmas stars as a characteristic element of the stage design. The show recalls the traditional rituals of carolling and nativity plays.

Concert of the “Samoróbka” workshop group
During a series of workshops, a group of about 20 participants built their experimental instruments, supervised by Paweł Romańczuk (Małe Instrumenty). Now they will play them during a concert, summing up the project.

A play by Teatr Snów from Gdańsk
An outstanding story of a man walking on stilts, who lives at the borderline of the dream and reality. The world of a giant from the viewpoint of the audience, which for the protagonist is a tiny reality. The colourful show will take place in front of the Main Railway Station.
