WHAT IS BASK?
BASK was created as a platform for dialogue between Wrocław and San Sebastian, the Wrocław's twin European Capital of Culture 2016. Its aim is to look for common points between Polish and Basque cultures and to prepare space for undertaking creative activity and gaining practical artistic skills during workshops and cultural events. Each summer, during a 3-day long event, one forgotten localization in the city of Wrocław turns into the centre of dialogue and exploration of the Basque culture. This year's edition of the event will take place on July 1-3, in the villa formerly owned by Oswald Püschel at Parkowa 1-3 in Wrocław.
The ‘Wrocław — Backyard Door’ project is an element of the Visual Arts component of the European Capital of Culture Wrocław 2016 programme. The project consists of artistic interventions within the public space of the City of Wrocław, with an emphasis on its backyards — by which we mean large communal spaces usually enclosed by several townhouses or blocks of flats. All of the artistic activities were based on cooperation with the residents.

“Dispossession” is an exhibition associated with Venice Biennale that touches on the issue of people ousted from their homes, during World War II, as well as present day conflicts and migrations. The artworks which have been created especially for this exhibition by artists from Germany and Ukraine, have integrated into the realm of Renaissance palazzo.

In 2016, ESK Wroclaw pays tribute to sculpture Eduardo Chillida, one of the most important Spanish artists of the twentieth century, who was born in San Sebastian – a city that together with Wroclaw shares the title of the European Capital of Culture.

The exhibition displayed at the Main Railway Station in Wroclaw presents artworks of acclaimed sixteen artists (including : Grupa LUXUS, Izabela Gustowska, Józef Hałas) form the collection of the Lower Silesian Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts which has been compiled since 2004.

The exhibition titled „Meditation and expressions” displays artworks created by six outstanding Polish contemporary artists which have been selected by two critics who have very different visions on art. In effect, the project becomes a clash between both the art of expression and art of meditation. Bożena Kowalska: Wojciech Fangor, Roman Opałka, Kajetan Sosnowski i Mariusz Hermansdorfer: Magdalena Abakanowicz, Władysław Hasior i Alina Szapocznikow.

Görlitzer ART is an exhibition of contemporary arts located in the public space of Görlitz. The exhibition includes a display of artworks created by artists from Wrocław – the European Capital of Culture 2016. The participants include acclaimed artists from Wroclaw and Lower Silesia region as well as young adepts of arts and students of Geppert Academy of Fine Arts. Their installations and objects open a new perspective on urban fabrics of historical architecture of this German city.

AIM (Artists’ Initiatives’ Meetings) is a network of artistic initiatives linking their engagements and exhibitions from eleven European countries including Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Holland, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. AIM was established in order to create a common platform for both swapping experience and knowledge as well as to increase visibility alongside mobility from the undertaken activities. Moreover, this international network has provided feasible access to various artistic organizations, professionals as well as general public.

The exhibition rediscovers the oeuvre created in the first half of the twentieth century by the Wrocław-based artist – Wacław Szpakowski – who deserves a lasting position in contemporary art history. Each drawing by this pioneer of abstractionism is just one continuous line that creates stunning, quasi labyrinth-like, rhythmical form of visual and temporal character.

The exhibition of Marc Chagall’s art displays sixty five artworks from the series “La Bible”, which were created by using lithographic techniques and etchings. This art collection comes from The Marc Chaggall Museum in Vitebsk (Belarus) , established in 1991 and located at the house, where Chagall spent his youth. The exhibition is displayed in the historic interiors of the Ksiaz Castle in Wałbrzych.

Over the past 13 years, SURVIVAL Art Review has been an artistic event that represents contemporary art in the public space of Wroclaw.
The event organizers on annual basis select a different open space in the city which is somehow forgotten or unavailable on daily basis to the inhabitants and rediscover it by the means of a contemporary art.

At the end of June, Museum of Contemporary Art will be opened in the newly renovated Pavilion of Four Domes in the Centennial Hall complex. The exhibition will display the masterpieces of the Polish contemporary art, including works of: Magdaleny Abakanowicz, Jerzego Beresia, Włodzimierza Borowskiego, Władysława Hasiora, Jana Lebensteina, Tadeusza Kantora, Aliny Szapocznikow, Henryka Stażewskiego, Jerzego Tchórzewskiego.

WHAT IS BASK?
BASK was created as a platform for dialogue between Wroclaw and San Sebastian, sister European Capitals of Culture 2016. It is the search of a space of common points between the Polish and Basque culture, a place of learning creative activities and practical artistic skills in workshops and cultural events. For 3 days each summer, one of the forgotten spaces in Wroclaw becomes a center of dialogue and exploring the Basque culture. This year’s edition of BASK will be held on 1st-3rd July at a villa at Parkowa 1-3 street.

Wrocław’s Gallery and Studio Art Brut, managed by The World of Hope Association, have been invited to participate in the project OpenHUB Europe. Partners from Germany (OSTRALE–Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst), Italy (Associazione Culturale Arci Equinozio), Belgium (Netwerk – centrum voor hedendaagse kunst) and Poland (Stowarzyszenie Świat Nadziei) constitute an interdisciplinary platform in the field of contemporary art.

The objective of this wide-scope project is to enhance awareness of a distinguished artist from Wrocław and founder of the concrete poetry –Stanisław Dróżdż. The project contains an exhibition of visual works and poetic texts by Stanisław Dróżdż, which will be displayed throughout public areas in the city. The artists’ works will be presented in a form of murals placed on gable walls of the selected buildings and advertising media will be placed on several bus and tram stops.

The exhibition represents a multicultural, multicolor character as well as important status of Silesia achieved in the past centuries. The main reason for organizing this international event is to remind about one of the most magnificent and most beautiful artworks, which is presently almost completely absent in the awareness of Poles and Silesians.

Competition Sympozium: Akademia Sztuk Pięknych im. Eugeniusza Gepperta
The Geppert Competition is a cyclical musical event open to young painters. Its main objective is to present a comprehensive overview of current developments in the field of painting in Poland as well as to promote debuting painters. The competition has been held uninterruptedly since 1989 and presently belongs to the important review of young painters in Poland.

The Monumental Ceramic Mural measures 18 x 2,1 m and is formed from various unique tiles by ceramic artists all of which have been invited from all over the world to be a part of this project. This ceramic “meeting” of different cultures and artistic structures will be realized on the wall of the underground passage “Przejście Słodowe”.

The exhibition is devoted to photography and presents its history form the moment of its inception. Apart from renowned authors and curators such as Erik Kassels or Volker Hinz, the audience will have an opportunity to view archival daguerreotypes, carte de visite which will be presented together with the contemporary amateur photos from Instagram or Flickr.

The title of the exhibition “The Germans Did Not Come” makes a perverse reference to a widely spread fear among Wroclaw’s inhabitants (which persisted many years past the war) that the return of the previous inhabitants, Germans, triggers a series of consequences. It also refers to an ironic work titled “Disassembly” created by Jerzy Kosałka from “The Germans Have Come” series.
Come and see the most famous exhibitions of the European Capital of Culture Wrocław 2016. On this special occasion – the Closing Weekend of the ECoC Wrocław 2016 Programme – admission to selected museums in Wrocław will be free. For three days, the most famous exhibitions that visited Wrocław will be available to everyone.
Projects
An exhibition of works of Eduardo Chillida, an artist born in Basque Country, is a gesture of a dialogue with the partner Capital of Culture 2016 – San Sebastian. Chillida is more than one of the most important Spanish artists of the second half of the 20th century, he is one of the most important sculptors in the world, one of the leading representatives of abstraction, whose works can be found in the most prestigious collections and museums in the world. The premise of the project is presentation of relationships between Chillida’s works and music. The starting point is the sculpture itself as a musical metaphor, an acoustic element, an instrument encouraging to aesthetic and musical reflection. That is why there will be enriched with two additional elements of particular importance: a sound installation by the composer Gorka Alda and the opening concert of José M. Sáncheza-Verdú. The exhibition is organized in cooperation with Chillida-Leku Museum and BWA Wrocław – Galleries of Contemporary Art.

From May 2015 to the end 2016 Wrocław Airport has become a stage for artistic activities.
In May 2015, “Invasion” created by Jerzy Kosałka has inaugurated a series of presentations. This ironic installation by Kosałka has become a form of generic scene, where a squad of flying storks ridden by dwarfs attempts to land in the main hall of the airport.

The project titled „Being myself” utilizes photography as a creative and practical tool to express cultural visions of people from a lower socio-economic status.

Komiksofon” is an experimental project, where Polish comic books writers have come to grips with facing their own interpretation of their own drawings. The book writers have selected the music background for each of their own illustrations. An insightful review of their comical art projections is followed by a discussion amongst authors and concluded by their own drawings.
An international exhibition at Dizajn BWA Wrocław gallery will present graphic designers who become activists in order to speak about important social and political issues. The project investigates the question of the responsibility of designers having a significant impact on social life. They have a
possibility to stimulate consumers to critical thinking and involve them in the creation of new relationships, connect ideas and people.

The project of a presentation of visual works of Stanisław Dróżdż in public spaces of the city in the form of murals on four walls of buildings in and out of the centre of Wroclaw. The artist’s works will also be presented in advertising spaces located at selected bus and tram stops. The culmination of the project will be a sculpture by Barbara Kozłowska entitled Solitude (1970), inspired by a work by Dróżdż of the same title (1968), and a publication – a book of poetry – a collection of previously unpublished 35 poetic texts by Stanisław Dróżdż. The title of the book is Pozasłowne środsłow międzysłowia (1969).

Ceramics and glass. Sensual program

Wrocław is an important international center for development of glass and ceramics arts. The city has provided a stage, where all artists who have been involved in this demanding inspiring form of art will have an opportunity to meet for the first time.
The aim of the exhibition Sensual Areas planned for spring 2016 at the City Arsenal is a presentation of the artistic environment of creators of glass and ceramic art associated with the former State Higher School of Fine Arts, and now the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw.

Dizajn BWA Wrocław
Teraz Dizajn! is an educational program, which apart from exposition activity, is the core project of the gallery Dizajn BWA Wrocław.
„Teraz Dizajn!” is a platform for discussion about the form of contemporary design, which is defined as an interdisciplinary field that undergoes constant metamorphosis and negotiations.
The anniversary edition of the Triennialle of Drawing in 2016, organized in cooperation with the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts, wants to present in four major exhibitions and six accompanying ones the full spectrum of activities in the area of contemporary drawing. The form of the Trienniale festival will activate considerably more viewers, offering them in addition a symposium, numerous workshops and meetings. Think Tank lab Trienniale will become a forum, a place of confrontation of different attitudes, ways of thinking about contemporary drawing and art.

The project consists in the realization of tens of artistic interventions in neglected parts of Wroclaw, primarily in backyards. Artists working in a given space will cooperate with residents to develop solutions which would combine the ideas and needs of both sides. Artistic interventions should make the residents aware of their strength – the fact that they can have a real impact on their immediate surroundings. In the project Wroclaw – Backyard Door, changes in appearance and infrastructure of the backyards from the title are important, but the most important are the changes which perhaps will occur in humans.

WHO KNOWS: How many Polish chairs have the status of an icon? Which Polish chairs have gained international recognition?„Sitting Polish Style” is an educational project that aims at bringing together the best examples of Polish industrial design. All the objects have been made by Polish designers and implemented in the production process of Polish factories during 1941-2014. Many of them have become symbols of their times and gained international recognition. The collection features designs which have been awarded by RED DOT museum.
