LEMological Congress: discussions, films, music

Stanisław Lem - one of the most outstanding minds of our continent at the turn of the 20th and 21st century - intrigued with his knowledge, erudition and visionary ideas about the future of our planet and the human kind. His books entertained and taught many generations of his readers in many countries, as they were translated into more than 40 languages. American writer Philip K. Dick even suspected that LEM was in fact not a name of a writer, but a team of academics and writers.

The congress dedicated to Lem’s creations will run on November 28-30.

During the Congress, the most exceptional representatives from many diverse fields: astronomers, mathematicians, physicists, computer scientists, biologists, geneticists, literature experts, linguists, philosophers, ethicists, sociologists and film experts will take a look at concepts and visions of the world in the works of the author of Solaris during nine thematic debates. The first one of them, titled “Lem - Live” (November 28, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) will feature people who had known the writer personally and who worked with him: members of his family, friends, former secretary and authors of interviews with the artist. Another debate, “Lem and the Polish language” (November 28, 12:30 p.m. - 2:20 p.m.) will be attended by Prof. Jan Miodek, Prof. Jerzy Bralczyk and others. “Lem as space explorer” (November 29, 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.) will be discussed by astronomers, astrophysicists and astronauts, including General Mirosław Hermaszewski. The next day, contemporary science fiction writers, including Jacek Dukaj and Marek Oramus will take on the subject of “Lem as a father of Polish science fiction literature” (November 30, 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.).

Program kongresu

The Congress will be accompanied by film screenings. We are going to see a documentary devoted to Stanisław Lem, The Author of Solaris, directed by Borys Lankosz, as well as two adaptations of Solaris by Andrei Tarkovsky and Steven Soderbergh. What are the opinions of the greatest Polish film experts on these films? We will get the answer during the debate “Lem on the small and silver screen” (November 28, 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.).

The event in Wrocław, spanning three days will be a summary of the state of knowledge about the biography and creations of Stanisław Lem, but on the other hand it is going to show which sciences did the author use as inspiration, and which ones were inspired by his literature.

At the end, we have a special musical surprise in store - an accompanying event titled Lem session - a jazz concert by outstanding musicians, who will improvise on Lem themes (scenes from his novels, keywords, quotes) and discuss their meetings with Lem’s prose. Can the uniqueness of the literary words be expressed with the language of music? We will get to know the answer on November 30 at 7:00 p.m. at Impart Festival Office theatre hall.
