The exhibition dedicated to Europe’s premium award for achievements in architecture will feature one hundred and fifty most significant projects completed throughout the last quarter of a century.
The Museum of Architecture in Wrocław has just begun presentation of the exhibitions prepared under the 2016 European Capital of Culture agenda, starting with two events dedicated to the most important European architecture award, granted from 1988 by the Mies van der Rohe Foundation.
The competition assumes no limitations as to the scale or function of structures. All editions included private houses, public utility buildings, museums and institutions of culture, sports facilities, education and health care centres as well as large-scale infrastructure and transport system related projects. Next to huge buildings and urban development plans, one would come across rather small and low-budget projects. However, their common denominator is the very fact that they have all largely contributed to the development of the European culture landscape.
Made in Europe is a history of the past 25 years of European architecture. The exhibition comprises nearly 150 models and visualisations of ca. 3.000 projects submitted to the award competition since 1988. So far, it was only shown to the public at the last Venice Biennale at Palazzo Michiel as well as in Shanghai under the Shanghai Urban Space Art Season 2015 (SUSAS) programme. As a part of the Wrocław-based edition of Made in Europe, the European Identity project is shown, being an attempt to find an answer to the question of the identify of European architecture.
As a means to contribute to the discourse initiated by the Mies van der Rohe Foudnation, we would like to invite everyone to meetings with designers of the projects completed in Poland, shortlisted for the final stage of the Mies van der Rohe award for European architecture. Our intention for the meetings is to refer to the discussion commenced at the Venice Biennale in 2014, revolving around the search for identity and specificity of European architecture.
