Nagore Legarreta [San Sebastian]: workshop / pinhole cameras

A photographic camera can be built just using a can. It is a very simple way to take photographs. This is the technic that the Basque photographer Nagore Legarreta uses in her projects.

During the workshop Legarreta wishes to share her experience with the citizens of Wrocław – adults and children. In her project she is trying to answer the question: what does the Oder river see? To answer that question she is putting the cameras she builds in the river. During the workshop she wishes to do the way back, and ask how do citizens of Wrocław see the Oder river. The photographs resulting from the workshop will be exhibited, together with those of the photographer, at Ruska 46 backyard from 20th to 22nd of September, within the framework of the “City and Culture” conference.

What are we going to do during the workshop?
Adults and kids are invited to build a camera using a can. It is no needed to have knowledge about photography, and the materials will be provided.

In the first part of the workshop we will build the camera: paint it, make a hole and close it, so that the light does not enter. After that the photographer will explain how can we know how long should the hole be open to take a good photo. Legarreta will also talk about the other matters, so the participants can later construct pinhole cameras on their own.

After loading the camera with a photo paper in the darkroom, in the second part of the workshop, participants will be invited to go to the places that surround the Oder river. They will be asked to choose a place related to the river, which is important for the one that takes the photo. After that we will go back to the darkroom and develop the pictures in the buckets. Participants will be also asked to explain why did they choose to take the photos in those places. Their answers will be recorded, so they can be presented at the exhibition as well.

Who can take part in the workshop?
Everyone! Children from the age of 6 are more than welcome to participate with their parents, and build the pinhole camera together.

Workshop will be held in English with a Polish translation.
