Words Beyond Borders, or the best reportage of 2015 selected by students

The award gala of the Ryszard Kapuściński Award for Literary Reportage will take place on 16 May at 7:00 p.m. at the National Forum of Music. This year, the setting of the Student Award will be exceptional, as the gala itself will become part of the European Capital of Culture Wrocław 2016 event programme. Ed Vulliamy, reporter for The Guardian, who in the 1990s served as a war correspondent in former Yugoslavia, and as one of the first journalists described the Serbian Omarska death camp, will be the special guest of this year’s gala. The event will also be accompanied by the Silesian Art Collective Chamber Ensemble concert.

The student jury comprises a group of creative writing students from the department of Journalism and Social Communication at the University of Wrocław, under the guidance of  Urszula Glensk, Ph. D.  The young people read, rate and review 10 books nominated by a professional Jury of the Ryszard Kapuściński Award for Literary Reportage.


Among the winners in the past were Mark Danner for his Massacre at El Mozote -  a story about depravity of the government, and Magdalena Grzebałkowska for her book Beksińscy. Portret podwójny. [Beksińscy. A double portrait]  The award will be given out in Wrocław for the first time, four days before the official gala in Warsaw. The award will be accompanied by a review of documentary movies titled Documentaries Beyond Borders.

The students’ jury includes: Mariusz Bartodziej, Gabriela Będkowska, Hania Ciesielska, Maciej Jaroszewicz, Rafał Kałwa, Karolina Kijek, Iza Kmieć, Elżbieta Kostecka, Janek Kozub, Weronika Nowogórska, Liliya Pislar, Marta Rosa, Adriana Siess, Anna Streczeń, Paulina Śledziona and Maciej Wróbel.
